Associate Professor, Fredrik Bäckhed, an expert in cellular microbiology and mouse physiology, combines clinical oriented research with gnotobiotic mouse models to address the role of the normal gut microbiota in metabolic diseases. Dr Bäckhed holds a PhD from Karolinska Institutet, Sweden in 2002 and performed his postdoctoral training at Washington University, St Louis where he identified the gut microbiota as an environmental factor that regulates adiposity and obesity. Since September 2010 Lorenza joined the Nutrition and Nutrigenomic Group as part of “TrentinoGut” start-up team grant awarded by the Marie-Curie/Provincia Autonoma di Trento COFUND program. The research of the group focuses on the health promoting attributes of whole plant foods and their polyphenolic and prebiotic components, and other traditional Trentino food products. Profile:

Bernard Corfe initially trained as a microbiologist, but now works at the interface of cancer biology, gut microbiology and nutrition in lower gut health. Primary research interests are in the roles of short chain fatty acids (butyrate, propionate etc) upon the mucosa and the molecular mechanisms by which cell turnover, differentiation and neoplasia are regulated. The proteomic, cytoskeletal, metabolic and histopathological effects of the SCFA on the gut wall in pre- and neoplasia are our main focus. The degree to which gut microbiota and diet define the SCFA composition of that environment and thereby modulate cancer risk are emerging as a key research focus. Research interests extend to IBD and IBS.

I have conducted five human feeding studies and managed another four human feeding studies at Reading. These human feeding studies, often built on initial in vitro microbiology experiments, have led to a number of functional food products, which are now or have been on the European market. Over the course of my postdoctoral training, I developed a broad interest in the human gut microbiota, its interactions with the host in both health and disease, and its modulation through functional foods. This has allowed me to work on diverse areas of gut microbiology, including studies examining dietary interactions in ulcerative colitis, IBS, the effect of processing and heat modification on foods and their subsequent impact on the gut microbiota, and the impact of whole plant extracts on the gut microbiota.

Our group’s overall theme is defining how immune responses in the gut and skin are initiated and controlled. We use a combination of in vitro and in vivo approaches to define the mechanisms of crosstalk between immune cells, bacteria (commensal and probiotic), pathogens and epithelial cells. Dendritic cells (DCs) are essential cells that direct immune responses, whether they be tolerogenic (e.g. to harmless or beneficial antigens such as food or commensal bacteria) or inflammatory (resulting in pathogen eradication). Therefore, a major focus in our lab is in defining how DC function is controlled.

Bacterial geneticist with over 25 years of experience with Bacillus since graduating from Oxford University (D. Phil, 1986) on understanding the genetic control of spore formation in Bacillus subtilis. Spent 7 years in the renowned laboratory of Professor Richard Losick at Harvard University Biological Laboratories and 3 years as an Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. Returned to UK in 1996 and has worked on developing bacterial spores as novel oral vaccines. The Cutting lab has developed a number of prototype oral vaccines and is working with one major vaccine company in a collaborative project to develop better, 2nd generation, oral vaccines. In 2005 I got the PhD at IPLA-CSIC (Spain) with the thesis “Human intestinal microbiota: analysis and evolution of relevant microbial populations and identification of probiotic bacteria”. Since then I have been working in different institutions analyzing human microbiota (fecal, colonic, gastric, lactational..) and studying dysbiotic conditions and its relation with the host health status. I have experience in anaerobic culture, isolation and identification of fastidious microorganisms from faeces and diverse mucosae, DNA extraction from human complexes samples/tissues, and the use of different microbial culture-independent techniques (including construction of clone’s libraries, PCR-DGGE, qPCR and 16S rDNA pyrosequencing). He was previously Chair of Clinical Neurosciences and Professor of Psychological Medicine at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London. Prior to that, he was a Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry at Trinity College Dublin. He has worked in research laboratories on both sides of the Atlantic and has a PhD in Pharmacology from the University of London. His main research interests are the biology of stress and the impact of the microbiota on brain development and function. In 1995 was awarded the Melvin Ramsey Prize for this research into the biology of stress. His current research is funded by Science Foundation Ireland, the Health Research Board and European FP7.

Harry Flint and his group are interested in the microbial ecology of the mammalian gut, in particular the human large intestine. His work focuses on the degradation of dietary non-digestible carbohydrates including resistant starch and plant cell wall polymers, making use of anaerobic culturing, genomics, molecular detection methodologies and both theoretical and lab-based modelling. Roy Goodacre is Professor of Biological Chemistry at the University of Manchester, UK. His group’s main areas of research are broadly within analytical biotechnology, and in the combination of metabolite and phenotypic measurements (including GC-MS, LC-MS, IR and Raman) and advanced chemometrics and machine learning to the explanatory analysis of complex biological systems. My research focuses on childhood immune and allergy development in relation to maternal immunity and microbial exposure. I am an immunologist collaborating with paediatric allergologists, obstetricians, clinical immunologists and microbiologists. Our research is translational, combining advanced laboratory methodology with careful, long-term, clinical follow-up during pregnancy and childhood with excellent compliance rates, also in randomised placebo-controlled intervention studies (see e g ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier NCT01542970). Caroline Karlsson is a microbiologist with a MSc in Molecular Biology and a PhD in Food Hygiene. The doctoral thesis focused on the gut bacterial flora with special reference to early in life. The microbiota was related to physiological traits, e.g. body weight and inflammation (Lund University, 2011). She is currently post-doc at the division of Applied Nutrition at the technical faculty of Lund University. The research focus on the gut microbial ecosystem and how that is affected by e.g. dietary intake, health and disease. Identification of potential probiotic bacteria and evaluation of its physiological and microbiological effects are also of significant interest. The microbial work is based on molecular genetic methodologies and both human trails and animal models are used to gain further knowledge. The research is interdisciplinary and collaborations with other professions are extensive.

Carolin Kolmeder is a doctoral student at the University of Helsinki and gained both BSc and MSc in nutrition science in Germany. Since the master thesis project her main used approach is proteomics. Sébastien Matamoros earned a PhD in food microbiology in Nantes, France, working on biopreservation of seafood products and cold adaptation mechanisms of psychrotrophic lactic acid bacteria. Sam Possemiers obtained a PhD at Ghent University (LabMET) on the production of phytoestrogens from hops by intestinal bacteria. Since 2007 he works as a postdoctoral researcher at LabMET. My research interests lie in mechanisms of repair and renewal of the intestinal epithelium. During diseases such as colon cancer and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), epithelial repair homeostasis is disrupted. My research focuses on the interplay between luminal bacteria and the epithelium through a family of proteins termed suppressors of cytokine signalling (SOCS) which are important mediators of cancer and inflammation. SOCS3 is silenced in many tumour types and influences growth of intestinal epithelial cells (IEC). We are currently exploring factors which influence turnover of IEC, focusing on the effects of luminal bacteria and helminths.

I am a Professor in microbiology at the Norwegian University for Life Sciences. My main research interest is host-bacterial coevolution and ecology (www.umb.no/midivlab). My main research area is the molecular microbiology and ecology of bacteria resident in the human gastrointestinal tract, focussing on the utilisation of prebiotic and other dietary substrates by commensal gut bacteria. Many of the abundant, metabolically important gut bacteria utilise specific dietary substrates, including resistant starch and prebiotics, for growth, illustrated by assessing changes in microbial diversity and activity following dietary shifts. Microarray technology,was used to investigate differential gene expression in Roseburia inulinivorans, a butyrate-producing obligate gut anaerobe. A novel metabolic pathway was identified enabling the utilisation of host derived epithelial glycoconjugates as energy sources during times of dietary starvation, facilitating its survival in the gut. These examples illustrate the adaptability and resilience of resident gut bacteria for survival.

I have worked toward the identification of probiotic candidates (Lactic Acid Bacteria) for poultry which can actually displace Salmonella and other enteric pathogens which have colonized the gastrointestinal tract of poultry, indicating that selection of therapeutically efficacious probiotic cultures with marked performance benefits in poultry is possible, and that defined cultures can sometimes provide an attractive alternative to conventional antimicrobial therapy. Ines Thiele is a systems biologist at the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) where she currently heads a research group in Molecu- lar Systems Physiology. She earned her Ph.D. in Bioinformatics from the Palsson’s lab at the University of California San Diego and subsequently occupied research at the University of Iceland, first as Assistant Professor, then as Associate Professor. Holistic research on GI-tract: I have done a food allergy model and shown how diarrhea is dependent on small intestinal mastosytosis and high IgE. Degranulating mast cells release mediators which permeabilize gut walls leading to altered smooth muscle response and affecting motility. By using this model the development of IBS could be studied. I am also interested on the strong allergens that have trypsin and chymotrypsin inhibition activity. When the digestive enzymes cascade will not be initiated by these first enzymes, the food cannot be absorbed but taken promptly to colon where it feeds pathogenic microbiota. Research Interests: Gastroenterology, motility of gut, IBS, allergy.

Koen Venema is an expert in gut microbiology. Primarily he studies the effect of food (constituents) on the activity and composition of the gut microbiota in relation to health and disease. He focuses special attention on the molecular interaction of pro- and prebiotics with the host. Koen is Associate Professor at Maastricht University, where he has recently started a new research group. I’m working in Professor Riitta Korpela’s Medical Nutrition Physiology group at the Institute on Medicine in the University of Helsinki. In my master thesis I studied the effects of active and inactive probiotics on intestinal permeability in vitro by measuring transepithelial electrical resistance and permeability of FITC. I’ll continue with the same topic in my PhD studies. I’m interested in understanding the mechanisms by which probiotics affect tight junction proteins. I’m going to do in vitro and in vivo studies. Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Leuven, Belgium. Kristin Verbeke is pharmacist by training and obtained a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, KU Leuven in 1995. Her current research interest is the exploration of the colonic bacterial metabolism in healthy subjects as well as in patients in which an abnormal colonic metabolism is expected (inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel disease, endstage kidney failure). Techniques such as stable isotope or radioactive isotope tracer techniques and gas chromatography mass spectrometry are developed to quantitatively analyse the metabolic processes occurring in the colon. Pre- and probiotics are used to modulate the colonic metabolism in an attempt to improve colonic health. Kristin Verbeke is author of >130 publication in international peer-reviewed journals.

Profile:

Professor Watson is a gastroenterologist. He was appointed Professor of Medicine at the University of Liverpool in 1998. He was an Associate Editor then its Deputy Editor of GUT (2003 – 2007). In 2010 he was appointed to the University of East Anglia as Professor of Translational Medicine. His research interests are apoptosis in intestinal epithelium and gut imaging. His expertise is cellular biology of cell shedding, barrier function and its consequences for disease. The interaction of gut microbiota with gut epithelium is a particular interest and he has developed a method for imaging intramucosal bacteria in humans with confocal endomicroscopy.

Scientific interest is focused on reduction of food allergenicity and induction of immunological tolerance in CMA patients by low antigenic cow’s milk products. Research has shown that the technological processes affect the changes in allergenic potential to a varied extent, lead to its reduction. An innovative approach was the use of microbiological transglutaminase, a cross-linking enzyme, during the production of fermented milk drinks. Kefir beverage produced with the addition of m-TG was characterized by diminished immunoreactive properties and enhanced sensory properties. Adding m-TG during the production of yoghurt fermented drinks would allow to give up the process of thickening milk with milk powder or protein isolates, which would comprise an additional, economically beneficial, aspect of obtaining low in antigens milk drink.

M. Zúñiga is a microbiologist that has worked in the genetics and physiology of lactic acid bacteria. His work currently focuses on the stress response of lactic acid bacteria and its role in their survival in the gastrointestinal gut, in particular, on the role of two component signal transduction systems in the regulation of the response of Lactobacillus casei against cationic antimicrobial peptides. The group is also working in the regulation of L-malate metabolism in L. casei and the response against bile stress.
